Chakras
by Mariah Prosper
Chakras were first associated with a Goddess named Kundalini.
She is described as a sleeping serpent coiled three and a half times
around the first chakra at the base of the spine. Her name comes from
the word 'kundala', meaning coiled. In the Hindu beliefs, this Goddess,
when awakened, climbs upward, chakra by chakra, until she reaches the
crown chakra at the top of the head. As she pierces each chakra, she
brings awakening to her subject. When her journey is complete, her
subject is said to be fully enlightened.
The path through the chakras forms a vertical column, called
Sushumna, our major highway up our spine. Traveling in what appears to
be in figure eight patterns through all of the chakras are two more
subtle energy currents called Ida and Pingala, meaning sun and moon
respectively.
The rising of Kundalini through the Sushumna awakens each of
the chakras, allowing one to experience new and 'higher' states of
consciousness. For this reason, emphasis has been on the arousal of
Kundalini.
Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel or disk. Described as a
wheel-like spinning vortex, a chakra is an energy point of intersection
between various planes. At every joint or intersection in our body,
lies a chakra.
There are many books written on the subject of chakras, such as
"Wheels of Life" by Anodea Judith, which we recommend for a complete
understanding of chakras.

There are seven major chakras, five 'secret' chakras, and several minor chakras which exist on many planes simultaneously.
In the human body, the chakras correspond to levels of consciousness (subtle bodies) as well as the physical.
The chakras are created by the junction of two vertical currents in our electrical system.
The lower chakras are of equal importance as the upper chakras.
Some systems of energy work only focus on the higher chakras--the heart
being the middle point of reference.
The Chakra System is the same as the "Tree of Life", a pattern
of evolution that describes dimensional shifts of consciousness. We are
presently going from the third level to the fourth.
Chakras correspond to colors, sounds, deities, dimensions and other subtle phenomenon.
The Chakra System has value for personal growth of the physical and spiritual self and is a great use in healing therapy.
The seven major chakras or levels are proportional to the
possible number of planes in a similar ratio to the seven colors of the
rainbow, seven notes of harmonic scale, and the spectrum of
electromagnetic waves. The chakras are the vibrations that we can
perceive with our present 'equipment' just as the colors of the rainbow
are all that we can perceive with the naked eye. There is more than our
eyes or mind can comprehend.
The chakras are in constant interplay and can only be separated intellectually.
The chakras can be opened through various exercises, through
meditations, acupuncture points, bio-feedback, Reiki initiations,
alternative healing methods, and general understanding, thus leading to
a more profound state of consciousness which anyone can obtain.
To understand the Chakra System, helps one to understand the
cause and effect of all that we experience within the body. It is a
system of self healing and self mastery by understanding the microcosm
of man and the macrocosm of the Universe of God/dess.
